LipSynch Battle: Synchrotron Spectroscopic Imaging for the Study of Forensic Cosmetic Traces

LipSynch Battle: Synchrotron Spectroscopic Imaging for the Study of Forensic Cosmetic Traces

JFS Forensic Lab Talks Seminar

The transferability and variability of cosmetics makes them an ideal form of forensic trace evidence. Despite this, they remain relatively under-studied compared to traces such as fibers or DNA, with current research largely limited to chemical variability studies of bulk cosmetics. In this presentation we will highlight an ongoing research project applying synchrotron-source spectroscopy to probe the chemistry of cosmetics at the microscale, along with contextual factors affecting their transfer and persistence. The challenges of microheterogeneity, importance of appropriate data analysis, and utility of synchrotron-source spectroscopy in forensic examinations will be considered. This presentation is appropriate for students, academics, and practitioners.
